A guide for adding necessary chemicals to your swimming pool.
It is crucial to accurately determine the amount of chemicals needed for your swimming pool by considering water testing results and the pool's size. Remember to strictly adhere to the instructions provided by the manufacturers and prioritise safety by wearing appropriate protective gear to prevent any accidents.
BUFFER/SODIUM BICARBONATE
Mix desired amount in a bucket of pool water and broadcast directly into the pool spreading evenly.
If using an acid feeder it is recommended to turn it off or add tubing to a bucket of water for 5 days.
ACID
To add the required amount of acid to your pool, add acid to a bucket of water then broadcast around the pool.
Do not add water to acid.
CHLORINE
When adding granular chlorine to your pool, start by calculating the appropriate amount according to your pool's size and the guidelines provided by the manufacturer. Next, dissolve the granules in a bucket of warm water, making sure to stir until fully dissolved. After that, carefully pour the solution along the edge of your pool to guarantee uniform distribution. Similar to liquid chlorine, it is recommended to perform this task in the evening or early morning to reduce chlorine loss caused by sunlight exposure.
SALT
To add salt to your pool cut open the bags and pour into water around steps if you have a suction cleaner in the pool. If not, you can spread the salt around the pool using a pool brush.
STABILISER/CYANURIC ACID
To add stabiliser to the pool you can sprinkle slowly into the skimmer box or mixed into a bucket of water then broadcast over the pool. When using a system with an ORP probe you will have to add to a bucket of water and broadcast over the pool. Don't broadcast in a vinyl lined pool.
CALCIUM
When adding calcium to the water you will need to mix into a bucket of water before it is added to the pool.
If other chemicals have been added to the pool, it is important to not add calcium for a couple of days.
PHOSPHATE REMOVER
When adding phosphate remover to the pool, it is recommended to pour it into the skimmer box. Prior to application, ensure that the sand filter is backwashed or the cartridge filter is thoroughly cleaned. For cartridge filters, add 100mls per week until the full amount is reached. It is important not to exceed the 100mls per week limit to avoid potential blockages in the cartridge filter.
ALGAECIDE
When using a copper based algaecide with a long life, it is important to wait until the next day to add it to the pool if any other chemicals have been added. Prior to adding the algaecide, mix it into a bucket of water and then add it to the pool away from the skimmer box.
The information provided above serves as a general guideline. It is important to consult the manufacturer's instructions if there is any uncertainty, and to verify that the chemicals are suitable for use with your sanitation system.
